Frequently asked questions
Semi-permanent makeup, permanent makeup, microblading, nanoblading, micropigmentation and cosmetic tattooing are all terms used to describe the process of replicating and enhancing eyebrows, lip blush, eye liner, beauty spots, freckles and hairline/scalp transformations.
This process is carried out by implanting specially designed, hypoallergenic, plant based pigments just below the surface of the skin into the dermal layer. Pigment is implanted using a very fine needle either manually or by machine.
Topical anaesthetics are used in order to minimise any discomfort. Most clients are relieved to discover cosmetic tattooing is not what they expected and no where near as painful as they first imagined. We are a vibrant studio with music playing which helps clients feel more at ease and you're welcome to bring headphones to listen to your own beats if you feel it will help!
Results can vary from person to person. After all we're all different and our body will react to 'foreign substance' in our own way. However you can expect your SPMU to last, on average, 9 months to 3 years. Pigment breaks down and fades with time - and always fades to a dull version of the pigment colour that's been chosen and implanted. The acceleration of pigment breakdown can be down to: immediate aftercare, sun exposure, age, skin type and routine and your health. So looking after your SPMU is paramount to it's longitivity. You can expect to come back anywhere between 6-18 months in order to top-up and maintain your new look.
There are many reasons for considering SPMU ranging from those who want to look and feel a little more lovely in themselves at all times, to those who require some form of corrective enhancement for medical reasons. You may choose to have cosmetic micropigmentation for the following reasons: -Allergies to conventional make-up.
-No time to apply make-up daily.
-Thin, pale or poorly defined lips.
-Seeking correction of asymmetrical (“lop-sided”) facial features.
-Physical difficulties which make the application of make-up difficult.
-You may participate in sports such as swimming, running etc. Making the up keep of makeup looking fresh difficult during these times.
-Over-plucked eyebrows resulting in gaps and or traction allopecia.
-Loss of part, or all, of hair due to a medical condition.
-Because you want to!
As long as you are generally healthy, over 18 years of age and don’t have any skin diseases or infections in the area to be treated, there are few medical reasons why clients should not undergo treatment. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to delay treatment. Insulin dependent diabetics, and people with some heart conditions will also not be suitable for treatment. If you are prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring generally I advise against cosmetic tattooing. In some cases written consent from your GP may be required before proceeding with treatment. A detailed consultation is always carried out prior to treatment.
No recovery time is necessary! In fact the majority of my clients walk out of the studio looking 'no different' to the passer by. Only we'll know you've had any aesthetic work. In some instances there may be swelling and or slight bruising, however you can return to work and normal activities immediately after any treatment. There is however a 2-4 week healing period and aftercare needs to be followed exactly.
An aftercare bag is provided and instructions are sent out via email before your arrival so you're familiar with what's expected in advance. Generally rules to follow are: -Avoid sports/vigorous activity thats likely to get skin hot and sweaty for 1 week post treatment.
-No swimming or saunas for 2 weeks post treatment.
-When your skin starts to heal it will get itchy and scabs will form- DO NOT PICK THEM.
-No topical products (aside from given aftercare balm) to be applied directly to treated area for 4 weeks post treatment.
-Do not touch the treated area with unclean hands.
Our skin is amazing. It works extremely hard to heal our bodies whenever trauma occurs. It takes only a matter of days for the upper surface level of the dermis to heal. This is apparent in the form of scabs (the clotting and hardening of platelet cells) it then takes a further few weeks for the layers under that to 'self stitch' back togther. Which is when we get you back in for your second top up session. During the healing phase it's very important to look after your skin to avoid infection as well as helping to look after your new SPMU. *Do not expect your skin to heal perfectly after the first session. This is a two-part (sometimes multiple) process depending on treatment and skin type. Your skin will go through different stages in terms of colour and often will appear patchy/dissappeared in places during the healing process so please be patient. Oiler skin types may not suitable for hairstroke style eyebrows.
Yes. All clients should return 3-6 weeks post treatment for a top up, this is included in the cost. Treatment is never complete until your second session. Subsequent top ups thereafter are charged and prices can be found in the pricing page. All top ups must be carried out within 4 months of your initial treatment- it is your responsibility to book your top up session. Booking a top up after the 4 month period has passed will result in starting the process again and thus charged full rate.
Skin tests for cosmetic tattooing, much like 'conventional tatooing', aren't essential but beneficial to those with sensitive skin. You can come by the studio up to 24 hours prior to your treatment for this. Plant based vegan inks are used at Profile + Aesthetics.
